Dead Serious #001
Dead Serious #001 (MP3 – 12MB – 34min 49sec)
What is Death?
The first Dead Serious program introduces the host Molly Carlile and explores what we understand “death†to be.
Molly explains some of the historical influences that have caused dying people to become isolated from their communities. Molly suggests that the ‘medicalisation’ of death in the 20th century caused care for dying people to become a possession of the acute health sector as opposed to remaining a family and community experience.
Molly explores the development of Palliative Care as a medical specialty and suggests that we now face the challenge of stopping death and grief becoming ‘intellectualised’ and therefore further removed from mainstream society.
In this first Dead Serious program, Molly also interviews members of the public to explore their personal understanding of death, which highlights a variety of personal experiences.

Molly, welcome to the Podcast Network. This is a brave choice and I think you’ve set the right tone. As someone dealing with an elderly mother in law, rapidly approaching the end of her journy (and there’s my contribution to the euphemism list) I’m interested in the stories of others.
Keep up the good work.
