Dead Serious #008 The “Dying Bit”
Dead Serious #008 (MP3 – 16MB – 45min)
LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE
This weeks episode may be a bit confronting, but is a basic runthrough of what happens on both a physical and emotional/mental/spiritual level as a person moves thru the ‘dying process’.
It’s sort of an “all you wanted to know about dying……..but were afraid to ask”
If you’ve ever thought that people behave like Linda Blair in ‘The Exorcist’ when they are dying……………you need to listen to this program!
It’s realistic………….yes, but it’s certainly not scary or depressing……………it’s everything YOU need to know, and we ALL need to know this stuff so that one day, when we are trying to support someone we love in their final living days, we will know what to expect and therefore be better equipped to support them.
This podcast provides you with a reference point to help you understand and appreciate what is happening as a person dies. Are they hungry? Are they in pain? Are they ‘fighting with death’? Are they conscious or unconscious? Can they talk? Can they hear you?
So ‘don’t be a wimp’, log on, download and find yourself a quiet place to listen and learn………this may be one of THE most important things you will ever hear and it will change how you approach the death of people you care about and eventually your own death……………..the ‘final fronteir’
Music by Pete Donohue is greatly appreciated and feedback from listeners eagerly awaited on the Blog.
Don’t say ‘this is too hard’………….bite the bullet, let yourself experience something challenging and then talk to the people who are important to you about it………..spread the word!

Thank you for your direct, acurate and reasuring approach to sharing information on assisting those we love who are dying. I have just experienced my first death of a close family member, and consider it a priveledge to have been involved in the process, despite the pain of letting go. It is good for others to hear this podcast if they are fearful of the process itself, as our own lack of knowledge and “not knowing what to do” is what makes it more frightening than being there.
I encourage anyone losing a loved one to an illness (my aunt had cancer) to choose to be involved in some way, as it makes their passing easier and provides a sense of closure and resolution with that individual in a stronger way that a funeral itself did for me (I found the funeral more a communal letting go).

We are about to enter this phase with my Mother in Law. We have nursed her at home for 5 weeks after 8 months of terminal A M Leukeamia.
I wish they had told me it was Cheyne stoking and not chain.
This will be so helpful over the next few hours.
Regards
James

James, I don’t envy you……..it’s hard work being with someone you love while they are dying, but you will remember this time for years to come, so do the things you want to do. if you don’t understand something……ASK and keep asking until you get an answer that makes sense for you, but most of all LOOK AFTER YOURSELF! This is a very stressful time and you deserve to feel supported as does your mother in law.
Regards,
Molly
