James, I don't envy you........it's hard work being with someone you love while they are dying, but you will remember this time for years to come, so do the things you want to do. if you don't understand something......ASK and keep asking until you get an answer that makes sense for you, but most of all LOOK AFTER YOURSELF! This is a very stressful time and you deserve to feel supported as does your mother in law.
Regards,

We are about to enter this phase with my Mother in Law. We have nursed her at home for 5 weeks after 8 months of terminal A M Leukeamia.

I wish they had told me it was Cheyne stoking and not chain.

This will be so helpful over the next few hours.

Regards

Thank you for your direct, acurate and reasuring approach to sharing information on assisting those we love who are dying. I have just experienced my first death of a close family member, and consider it a priveledge to have been involved in the process, despite the pain of letting go. It is good for others to hear this podcast if they are fearful of the process itself, as our own lack of knowledge and "not knowing what to do" is what makes it more frightening than being there.

I encourage anyone losing a loved one to an illness (my aunt had cancer) to choose to be involved in some way, as it makes their passing easier and provides a sense of closure and resolution with that individual in a stronger way that a funeral itself did for me (I found the funeral more a communal letting go).
