Dead Serious #021 The beginning of the party

December 18th, 2005

(MP3-15.1 MB- 44min)
LISTEN
TO THE PODCAST HERE

Today’s episode is the beginning of the 21st episode celebration for Dead Serious. YES we’ve made it to 21 episodes! The show I intended to do with a range of TPN hosts has actually ‘blown out’ to multiple shows as the info these guys were willing to share was too good to end up on the ‘cutting room floor’!

My special guest today is “our Lord and Master”, Co-Founder of The Podcast Network, Cameron Reilly.

Get to know the ‘man behind the mask” of G’Day World, the Advita Show and the Father Bob Show (among others)………….Cam and I talk about:
- Indigenous issues
- Alcoholism and Alcoholics Anonymous
- Life changing experiences
- Chryogenesis
- Living to be 500 years old
- Becoming a cyborg
- “Backing up” your brain
- The future of TPN

Hear how the ‘reluctant father” became a convert to parenthood. Listen to Cameron struggle with the concept of fourth dimensional vibration.

What advice does Cameron have for kids entering the workforce? What does he think about ‘life long learning”? How does Cam “invest in his brain”? and what are his views about books?

All this and more on this 21st episode of Dead Serious……………….with up coming interviews with other TPN hosts who have challenging views on life including Wayne Turmel, Scott Sherman, Ian Dixon, Christian Payne, Des Paroz and Richard Giles. So, the celebration continues and I know you’ll enjoy finding out what makes these guys ‘tick’!

Comments and feedback (as always) are welcome.

You’ll notice there’s no music this week……….I couldn’t stop Cam long enough to include a track!

Recorded on Skylook.

The 21st Episode “Blow out”

December 15th, 2005

Well, I thought seeing the next episode will see Dead Serious turn 21, I’d have an online 21st Birthday party…………….a simple thought BUT

As usually happens with 21st birthday parties, first you invite a few people, then you have more and before you know it you have so many guests, the party explodes into the street, the ‘cops’ turn up and you all get locked up for drunk and disorderly!

Well that hasn’t happened at Dead Serious (the whole ‘cop’, d & d thing), however I started out intending to interview a few fellow hosts and talk to them about their lives, their passions, life changing experiences etc. hoping I’d get enough to patch together into a show…………………the result of this has been a stack of informative, contraversial and inspiring stories from fellow TPN’ers that’s just too good to chop up and squeeze into one show.

SO the 21st celebration at Dead Serious will probably run over a period of weeks and I think we could even subtext it as “get to know the man behind…………………………..(insert your favourite TPN show here)”.

Interestingly enough all of the hosts I interviewed were guys……………I dont know if this says something about me or about them, but they volunteered and I’m never one to turn down an offer to have a yarn with a handsome man…….. or two!

So buckle up and get ready to find out the innermost thoughts, emotions and passions of some of the high profile TPN dudes!

Oh, there’s no language warning as Matt, Freak and The Fatboy ‘piked it’!

Shirley Maclaine on Dead Serious

December 12th, 2005

Well……..I tried to get Shirley MacLaine on Dead Serious, but she’s flat stick, however her PA sent this personal response:

“Dear Molly:

We sincerely respect your work in connection with grief and death and your desire to do an interview with Shirley MacLaine.

Unfortunately,…….. Shirley is presently involved in pre-production on four new films that will take her on lcoations around the world so she has asked me to respond for her.

She hopes you understand this.

She sends her admiration for what you are doing and best wishes for your continued work.

Dale Olson”

SO, we dont have Shirley on the program……………..but SHE LIKES THE PROGRAM …………….and that’s good enough for me!!!

VCE results

December 12th, 2005

This is just a friendly reminder for all the kids out there who are receiving their VCE/Higher School Certificate/High school results today.

This is not a measure of your intelligence or your emotional intelligence OR the effort you put into studying OR your value as a person OR your capacity to contribute to the world!

This score is purely a number………….IT DOES NOT DEFINE YOU!

Remember, Einstein could only get a job as a lowly patent clerk, because his University results were not reflective of his skill and yet he came up with E=MC2………….the Theory of Relativity, on which all subsequent thought on modern physics is built!

Nelson Mandella did not finish school.

Mother Theresa didn’t go to University.

Do a search on google for any famous philanthropist, ground breaking contemporary thinker, philosopher, artist, performer, social activist and you will find that the majority of them did not achieve entry point academic scores. You will find that many of the people you respect…………..you respect for their tenacity. They took disappointments as a motivation to pursue their goals with increased energy and committment.

SO, if your marks aren’t great…………use this disappointment as a MOTIVATOR. Committ yourself to pursuing your dreams with all of your energy. NEVER give up…………rewards come to those who are persistant and patient.

YOU ARE UNIQUE…………….there’s only ONE of you in this world and you have a unique role to play in the future of humanity………………..GO FOR IT and feel good about who your are!

Dead Serious #020 What makes a Leader?

On this episode my guest is Diann Rogers-Healey the founder of the Centre for Leadership for Women.

Diann established this organisation to empower and motivate the leaders of the future, (women in particular) to embrace their personal leadership style and pursue a leadership role in their communities.

Diann talks about the qualities of a leader, leadership styles, the “glass ceiling”, and seeing the potential in ourselves and others.

Ever wondered what the difference is between leadership and management? Ever wondered why some ‘middle managers are cranky’?…………….of course you can explore this further on The Cranky Middle Managers Show.

What about mentoring? What is it? What does it mean and how can you go about finding yourself a mentor?

The answer to these and a miriad of leadership issues are explored in this episode of Dead Serious.

The music track, “Life” is provided generously by Jeremy Donovan. This program is recorded on Skylook.

Take a breath

December 7th, 2005

In the mad and chaotic run up to Christmas, sometimes we forget what the whole thing is about.

We rush from shop to shop, ticking off the presents as we buy them…………..over spending on our credit cards and knowing we’ll have to ‘pay’ for the spending both with money and emotion in the New Year.

We ignore that little voice of inner guidence in our heads that is screaming at us to STOP!

What would happen if we did STOP?

If for once we walked slowly. If for once we focused on breathing. If for once we noticed the miriad of things going on around us………………..would our world collapse?

Just a thought……………maybe we can consciously focus on the little things on the runup to Christmas.

Maybe we can look for the smile on a child’s face. Maybe we can listen as friends laugh together. Maybe we can smell the ‘heat’ in the air as summer blooms around us (of course in the Northern hemisphere, you will smell the fresh chill of winter) and maybe we can be thankful for the joy that surrounds us that often we simply ignore, or don’t notice.

Enjoy the anticipation of the coming festivities and remember how much you have achieved during the year.

Have a good one!

Today my special guest is Jeremy Donovan, an artist, musician, performer and ambassador for Aboriginal culture and an Australian storyteller.

Jeremy, a decendant of both the Gumbaiingirr and KuKu- Yalanji tribes, grew up in Sydney and at the age of 16 was sent to live with his grandfather in far North Queensland in a traditional Aboriginal community where the people spoke an indigenous language he didn’t understand and lived in an environment where Playstations, electricity and western luxuries were unknown.

So started Jeremy’s journey to reconnect to the land, customs and language of his KuKu- Yalangi people.

Jeremy talks about how this was for him as a city kid. How he rediscovered his heritage. How he learned the stories of his people and how he discovered his life mission.

Jeremy talks to us about the stories of his people. How indigenous Australians were the original environmentalists. He talks about his ‘totems’. About language diversity in Aboriginal communities. About death and loss in Aboriginal communities and tells the very personal story surrounding the death of his grandfather and how the community responded to this.

Jeremy also tells us about the ‘changing face’ of Aboriginal Australia and how his work as an artist and musicican gives his life meaning and ‘provides a bridge’ between indigenous Australia and white Australia.

I’m sure you will find (as I have as I have got to know Jeremy), what an inspiring man he is. He has spent time in the juvenile justice system and moved from the ‘fringe’ to discover his personal heritage and now shares that with the broader community via his performances.

Music from Jeremy’s new CD Yalangi is featured in this episode of Dead Serious and I’m sure you’ll find as I have, that his music inspires, motivates and makes you feel a real ‘connectedness’ to the land we call ‘home’.

For those of you we don’t live in Australia, when you listen to Jeremy’s music you will experience the ‘essence’ of the ‘wide brown land’, ‘the land down under’.

You can find out more about the art, the music and the man, Jeremy Donovan by visiting his website (simply click on his name to go to the link).

My special thanks to Jeremy for his generosity. For sharing his music (which I will be featuring in subsequent shows) and his life story.

This show was recorded on Skylook.

The ‘didg’ man talks to Dead Serious

December 2nd, 2005

Put on your dancing shoes and get yourselves ready for an inspirational story as Episode 19 of Dead Serious hits the web.

My guest this week is an amazing indigenous Austalian man, Jeremy Donovan who among other things is well known as THE didgeridoo player in the country and who very generously has provided a number of amazing tracks from his latest CD for inclusion in this and up and coming Dead Serious programs.

So tune in on Sunday, as the show goes up and listen to the sounds of Australia as interpreted by Jeremy………….I know you’ll all be blown away by his talent and enthusiasm.

The Agony and the Ecstacy

December 2nd, 2005

Today , when I should be feeling elated about my son reaching manhood, turning 21 a beautiful, empathetic, gentle happy boy becoming a man we are so proud of………………..my pride and joy is shrouded with sadness and dispair.

Another mother, Kim Nguyen, is distraut because her son, Van, who she loved, nurtured and watched grow up, has been executed in a foreign country and she has even been denied the small request to hug him one last time.

I’m not condoning Van’s crime, and I’m not going to impose on you my views about the barbarity of the death penalty.

I ask one thing of you today.

Stop, think, connect with the overwhelming grief of a mother who has nurtured a child to adulthood and then had him stolen from her…………..not because of an accident or an illness………..but as the result of something she has had not control over……………..something she could not protect him from………something she could not change.

I sat quitely at 8.30am counting down the minutes until 9am when Van was scheduled to be executed. I thought, I prayed and I cried, as any other mother would, who can only imaging the torment of loosing a child.

So wether you agree with the death penalty……………….wether you think Van deserved what he got……………..it doesn’t matter.

Try to put that aside and spare a thought for his mother, his brother, his family and friends, who today will find no consolation……………and for whom life will never be the same.

Life is so precious and so fragile………………..we do well to remember this and to also remember that none of us know what our futures hold. I hope that none of us will have to deal with the pain of one of our children dying before us……this must be the ultimate wound.
